'What's his Name?'

8x10" oil on panel
Seems like the more I paint portraiture the harder it gets. One reason is, I have not figured out a solid approach, so I'm flailing and hoping for a solution in the process. I know I want to clean it up, simplify. You might think, that would be easy, but it takes organizing and sticking to the mission. But I always go off track. I know the solution is practice, but that means putting down painting kitties and I'm just not going there.

Hi Rachel,
Wow! I should have your problems! If this was difficult for you, may it always be so! I realize you know I'm a fan, so my praise likely doesn't mean much, but it's true. I've always envied your bold use of color and light in portraits--including the cats.
I'll wrap this up by saying be careful what you wish for. It's an old cliche, but often painfully true. Nothing worse than the boredom of doing every painting the same way. You've gotta admit that the excitement of that first brush stroke, and the lack of knowing if it'll be the best you've ever made or a total wipe out, is what brings you back to your easel. I've used up my quota of exclamation marks, so I'll sign off for today.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.
Sincerely,
Gary.
